Miles and Miles (Km and Km)

Date: Thu, 27 May 1999

Hi Glenn,

When I bought my P1800E I saw 152,000 on the odometer. I thought those were kilometers. But since the car has grown up in California it must be 152,000 miles. I'm a bit worried now. Do you have information about how many miles/kms people have driven with their P1800? Maybe it's something worth to let people respond to. By the way, I read in a Dutch magazine that there is one P1800 somewhere in the U.S. that has driven 1,800,000 kms without any restoration of the engine, so there is hope. Thanks.

Marcel - The Volvo B20 engine is very long-lived, and it is not unusual to hear of them being used for 200,000 miles without an overhaul. They can last even longer with careful maintenance, but sooner or later the engine must be rebuilt.

According to an article seen on the web, Irv Gordon's 1966 P1800 currently has traveled more than 1,700,000 miles. The article had a list of repairs and restored items on the last page that said Mr. Gordon had the engine rebuilt at 675,000 miles. But this is exceptional. -Glenn.
